Solve Your Drainage Problem by Planting A Rain Garden! - The BEST Plants to Absorb Excess Moisture!

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! It’s been quite the soggy start to Summer, but that’s not stopping the festival of flowers! If you’ve been dealing with drainage issues due to excess water, then this is the video for you! Dan and the team are going to be introducing you to the concept of Rain Gardens as well as to some plants that are perfectly suited for wetter areas! A Rain Garden is a design solution that seeks to guide and move water into the landscape, to control the speed of water and where it goes in the landscape. Typically, the core of a rain garden is a gravel “streambed” that acts as the lowest point in the garden. This is where fresh rainfall will flow while it percolates into the soil. Of course, no rain garden is complete without wet-site tolerant plants! When it comes to planting your rain garden and choosing your species, you may want to think about the garden in tiers, with the highest being the driest and the lowest being the wettest. Water will flow into the garden from the upper tiers, collecting in the lower basin, which will contain the most water-tolerant plants. If you’re wondering what some of the best plants for a rain garden might be, well you’re in luck! Ike and Amelia are here to walk you through 13 fantastic plants that will thrive in your new garden. Planting in a wet sunny spot? Maybe you want Goldenrod, Coreopsis, Rudbeckia, Turtlehead, Carex, Phlox, Milkweed, Catmint, False Sunflower or Burnet! Planting in wet shade? You can always go with Dicentra, Ferns, Rodgers Flower, Buckeye, Oakleaf Hydrangea, American Water Willow and Clethra. Plant These Perennials NOW! - The BEST Species for Sun, Shade, Deer Resistance, Drought and More!!

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! In this video, we're diving back into the world of perennials! Did you know that, in addition to it being Pollinator Month, June is also Perennial Month! Perennials are a true investment in the garden--and one that's sure to grow! There are perennials for every situation, and there's no better time than RIGHT NOW, when the soil is warm, to get them in the ground. Yarrow is an amazing native perennial that has a long history of medicinal use by many cultures. It can thrive in dry, sunny conditions and comes in a wide range of colors and flower shapes. Spigelia, also known as Pinkroot, is a unique native flowering plant that attracts hummingbirds and loves partly shady spots in the yard. Another great shade-loving plant is Astilbe, which sends up big, fluffy, colorful blooms in midsummer. It's deer resistant, which makes it perfect in areas with heavy deer traffic. If you're planting in full sun and want vibrant, long-blooming flowers, consider Spirea! These shrubs are easy to care for and make a great filler in the landscape. If you're looking to attract hummingbirds to a shady spot, Hostas are a great choice! They have large, heart-shaped leaves that come in a variety of colors and send up big flower stalks full of fancy drooping blooms. Delphinium are great native plants with gorgeous flowers that come in white, pink, blue and purple. They're also known as Larkspur, and they attract a ton of pollinators to part-shade spots. Virginia Sweetspire is one of our finest native shrubs here in New Jersey. They thrive from full sun to near full-shade, and can handle wetter soils really well. They also get beautiful Fall color. Potentilla is a classic shrub that tolerates drier sites in full sun. You can find them in pink, white, yellow and more. Oakleaf Hydrangea is another amazing native shrub with year-round interest. It buds in Spring, flowers in early Summer, gets beautiful Fall Color, then shows off its exfoliating bark for Winter. Finally, Northern Bush Honeysuckle is another native flowering shrub with small, showy flowers that bees and butterflies adore. They have great Fall color and provide a beautiful green screen. Planting Rhododendrons, Azaleas & Andromeda - Flowering Shrubs that LOVE the Shade!

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! In this video, you'll be hearing from Joe, Dan and Amelia about three phenomenal flowering shrubs that thrive in the shade: Rhododendrons, Azaleas & Andromeda. These are some garden classics with plenty to offer, and they're all right here at the nursery! Rhododendrons are prehistoric shrubs whose fossilized pollen has been dated back sixty million years. They burst into bloom in mid-Spring and provide a spectrum of colors in big, bountiful flower clusters. You can find them in red, pink, white, yellow purple and more. Even better, most Rhododendrons are evergreen, so they'll even provide greenery through the winter. Azaleas are also in the Rhododendron genus, and there are over a thousand varieties of them. There are 26 species of Azalea that are native to North America, with New Jersey's native being the Pinxterbloom Azalea. Azaleas are generally deciduous and tend to bloom a bit earlier than their "true" Rhododendron counterparts. Andromeda are beautiful, deer-resistant shrubs that love the shade. Also known as Lily of the Valley shrub, Andromeda has recognizable drooping flowers with a light, sweet fragrance. Leaves are normally a deep glossy green, with new growth coming out with a deep red color. Planting Crabapple, Lilac and Flowering Dogwood for STUNNING Spring Blooms & Fall Hues!

Planting Crabapple, Lilac and Flowering Dogwood for STUNNING Spring Blooms & Fall Hues!

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! In this week's floral report, we're covering three more amazing woody plants that bring vibrance and life to the Spring landscape: Crabapples, Lilacs & Flowering Dogwood. These are must-haves in any well-thought-out garden. Crabapples have been cultivated for between 4-10,000 years! They're also the ancestor of our common apples, which were bred over countless generations. These trees flowers profusely in mid-spring in shades of white, pink and red. Many cultivars will start their bloom more pink and fade to a white as the blossoms fully open. Crabapples themselves are tart but edible, best used sweetened up in preserves and jellies. Crabapples love full sun and moist, well-draining soil, but can handle a bit of shade, and when Fall rolls around, you can expect some beautiful foliage. Lilacs are the favorite flower of too many people to count! Beloved for their color, beauty and most of all, their signature fragrance, these shrubs and trees bring a calming scent to the landscape in Spring. There are varieties that bloom from early to late Spring, so you can even mix and match for an extended bloom time! Lilacs love moist, well-draining soil in full sun to part shade, and can handle light droughts in a pinch. These are long-lived shrubs--you can expect them to live over 100 years, making them a perfect heritage plant for future generations. They're a fantastic present for Mother's Day! Last up is our native Flowering Dogwood! These small shade-loving trees thrive in moist, well-draining soils and can handle light droughts similarly to Lilac. They prefer to grow in shadier conditions, such as under the canopy of a larger shade tree. The flowers will make use of early Spring light, before the taller trees leaf out, and then the Summer shade will protect Dogwood leaves from direct sun exposure and burning. That said, there are varieties of Flowering Dogwood that perform well in full sun, too. After they bloom, red fruits are produced, which serve as critical nourishment for our native wildlife. Flowering Dogwoods are New Jersey's Memorial Tree, meaning they are often planted to commemorate members of the armed forces. Here are timestamps for you! Planting Flowering Cherries, Magnolias & Redbuds for a Spring Floral Festival in Your Landscape!

Planting Flowering Cherries, Magnolias & Redbuds for a Spring Floral Festival in Your Landscape!

Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! The festival of flowers is rolling on, and flowering trees are blooming up a storm right now! This week, we'll be focusing on three types of classic flowering trees that can bring color, texture and even fragrance to your landscape: Flowering Cherries, Magnolias & Eastern Redbud. Flowering cherries come in countless varieties, with some of the most popular being Yoshino & Okame (early spring-blooming) and Kanzan (Kwanzan) & Flagpole (mid spring-blooming. The larger species max out around 40 feet, while smaller ones like Kanzan only grow to 15-20 feet tall and wide. These trees typically thrive in moist, well draining soils and can be planted both in groups or as specimen trees. The blooms range from white to light pink to nearly red, depending on the variety you choose. Magnolias are beautiful, ancient trees and shrubs that evolved on earth before bees existed! Many of them, like Southern Magnolia and Sweetbay Magnolia (both native!) have a gorgeous fragrance when blooming. Most Magnolia petals are also edible, and make a great addition to a coleslaw recipe. Their growth requirements are very similar to those of cherries--full sun to part shade, with moist, well-draining soil. Eastern Redbud is an incredible native plant in the Pea family featuring super-unique blooms that can pop right out of the trunk! These plants help fix nitrogen in the soil, promoting the growth of surrounding plants. The flowers are also edible, and have a soft crunch with a slight sweetness if you pick them at just the right time. These flowers are crucial for early season pollinators like bees, who wake up super hungry after their Winter slumber. Here are timestamps for you!
