Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens!! The chill is starting to set in, and the leaves are almost all down. That means it's time to dive into the wide world of evergreens! First up on the list is a genus of plants so big, they get their own video! This week, we're talking Junipers! Junipers are found world-wide and can grow in some of the highest elevations. They have strong roots that can break through tough soils, as well as hold soil together preventing erosion. You can find Junipers as groundcover, mid-size shrubs, spreading shrubs and upright trees, and some can grow as tall as 90 feet!! One fantastic Juniper is Eastern Red Cedar, a native plant here in the Northeast. These make excellent roadside plantings, privacy screens and more, all while feeding and housing bird populations! Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! In this week's video, we'll be diving into the world of evergreens with three low-growing favorites: Plum Yews, Sweetbox and Wintergreen. These plants keep their foliage year-round, so you never have to go without color and fullness. Plum Yews, or Cephalotaxus, are deep green shrubs that work perfectly as a small hedge, especially in their upright form. Their spreading form stays a bit lower to the ground and has more of a horizontal spread. The berries of the plant appear in late Fall and are a useful foodsource for birds. Sweetbox is a beautiful evergreen shrub with lush green, almost laurel-like foliage. In the spring, it features vanilla-scented flowers that give way to berries that come in red, blue and black. These plants don't get much taller than 2 feet tall, and will spread just as wide. Wintergreen is an amazing native evergreen groundcover that produces plump red edible berries in Fall. The berries taste just like the wintergreen minty flavor, and that's because it comes from this plant! It has vibrant leaves that turn reddish/orange in fall for an extra burst of color. Welcome back to Bountiful Gardens! In this video, we're taking another deep dive into three perennial favorites you NEED in your garden! And better yet, this is one of the best times of the year to get your plants in the ground! This week, we're learning about Caryopteris (Bluebeard), Amsonia (Bluestar) and Asters! Caryopteris is a gorgeous perennial shrub in the mint family that features silvery foliage and deep blue flowers in late summer and early autumn. As Fall sets in, the leaves will turn to a bright buttery yellow color before dropping for winter. Seedheads make a great foodsource for birds, and the flowers are beloved by countless pollinators. Amsonia, also known as Bluestar, is a native perennial that boasts light blue flowers in early Spring. Its delicate but strong foliage makes a great alternative to ornamental grasses, and in the fall, this plant bursts into firey hues. Planting in clusters is best for the greatest effect! Asters are the OG's of the Asteraceae family--the largest family of plants in the world! We have plenty of native asters here in NJ, and you can find a bunch of them right here at Bountiful Gardens! These wildflowers can start blooming anywhere from early summer all the way until November, depending on which species you choose. And the color selections are amazing!!
